Hand Painted Tonalá Mexico Pottery Wall Plate

Hand Painted Tonalá Mexico Pottery Wall Plate

Description

This is a pretty little Mexican plate made in the Tonalá area of rough tan clay. The hand painted artwork features a water bird in the center surrounded by flowers and reeds and a geometric border with the word "Mexico" painted in black. The predominant colors are soft: rust, grey, beige and white. This type of pottery is called bruñido, meaning burnished in Spanish, which is done by polishing with a stone.

This plate measures about 6 inches in diameter and 3/4 of an inch high. The back of the plate is unpainted and has a molded-in hanger. The plate is in excellent condition, with no cracks, chips or scratches, just a few tiny flakes in the rim paint. It works so well hanging with other artwork or sitting on a shelf or table.
